About Wag Ur Tail Dog Training

Now Servicing Northern Virginia

Meet Mike

Mike Morrison is a United States Army Veteran who served in Iraq. His time there eventually caused Mike to experience symptoms of PTSD that put his Army career to an end. During treatment, Mike saw that a fellow veteran was experiencing noticeable improvement with the help of a service dog. Mike had tried medication for PTSD, but he didn’t like the side effects, and he was curious to see if a service dog would be helpful to him.

Mike started doing research and was led to a program that allowed veterans to train their own service dogs. Mike had grown up with dogs and had always had a passion to work with them. The service-dog training program would facilitate healing from PTSD and allow him to achieve his dream of working with dogs on a full-time basis.

We service Fredericksburg and surrounding areas.

We sent Utley to stay with Mike for two weeks. We instantly noticed a difference when he got home. He was a puppy that knew almost nothing when he... left and had pretty much destroyed his crate. We couldn’t leave home home alone at all. Now he is good in his crate, comes when called, and is even better than he was on the leash. Good enough my 4 year old has no issues walking him.read more

Customer service at its finest! We adopted a 4 yr old mix at the shelter who had really bad anxiety. He really needed training, but being so anxious... we were worried. We contacted a couple of other dog trainers, but they use choke collars or e-collars and that made us both nervous due to our dog’s anxiety. When we called Wag Ur Tail Dog Training, Mike told us they only use positive training and are offering online classes! We signed up today and will update with progress!!read more

Friend told me to try the online classes and I was skeptical at first without direct access to a trainer, but the videos walk you through exactly... what you need to do to make sure the training works and sticks. We were able to use the financing option too so that has made the classes super affordable for us. We have three dogs and the cost of having each of them trained separately was daunting for us.read more

We thought this was positive reinforcement. After we paid and were shown the training, it begun with spraying your dog in the face ... with ice cold water and the use of choke collars. We had already paid and although concerned, thought maybe this trainer was trustworthy, and were excited at first to trust his training , which I expressed my enthusiasm to the trainer. But as time throughout the day went on, I felt uncomfortable with spraying my puppy in the face with cold water, he did not like it, probably breaking our trust. He also yelped on his choke collar , this is not positive training, I had not pulled or tugged at all, just introduced him to it. He also lowered the price of his online program the same day he charged me more, not warning me or offering the new price. We were not satisfied with the service, we wanted only positive training, if he had said choke collars and spraying our puppy in the face was in the training we would have considered another service.read more

Wag Ur Tail did a board & train with our 2 yo dog Copper. Great news...Copper is going GREAT! We’ve been doing our 2 mile walks every day and... he’s been AMAZING! Barking has been very little and when he does I just use the pet corrector and it stops! Still working on his front door manners but listens to “place” and “down/stay.” Yay!! Lynde (our trainer) was just fantastic to work with and really understood Copper. She explained everything she had taught him making it a smooth transition. Old dogs can learn new tricks! TJ is amazing. We recently adopted an 8 year old 90 lb. black lab with years of bad habits engrained. I called Wag... Ur Tail to help me with his leash pulling. He’s so strong and, candidly, walking him was embarrassing, miserable and unsafe. I saw major results within the first hour long session with TJ. It’s obvious that TJ LOVES dogs and has unlimited patience. He quickly identified the root of Brady’s problems and armed me with training tips to redirect, deescalate and create opportunities for good behavior. Jim and I know TJ on a personal level, we met him through his previous employer, and he offered at that time to help us with our dog. Angela was a... rescue, and suffered from severe anxiety. Jim and I did everything we could for Angela, but TJ suggested one step more. Now keep in mind, TJ knew our beloved Angela, and once she warmed up to a person, she loved that person....sadly, on Sept 29, we were walking Angela, with her sister, and 2 other pups, TJ had the 2 other pups. In the way of walks for Angela, it had been a really good day for her. Sadly, when we got near a local business, with patrons outside, something about the group of people just scared Angela, and she backed out of her harness.....Angela typically would back up from what scared her. Anyway, off Angela took, took off, Jim and TJ ran after her.....through traffic, through everything..... The search for Angela continued, TJ NEVER gave up! Sadly, Thurs October 4, our sweet Angela was found, TJ was the one that found her....bless his heart. He found our sweet girl on the train tracks, her collar had actually been knocked off of her from the impact. TJ brought our sweet girl out, yes, he placed our sweet girl in a trash bag, went with me to the vets office so her remains could be cremated. In no way is this anyone’s fault. It’s just a tragedy that happens. I suppose my point is this. Wag Ur Tail Dog Training, has compassionate employees, they will love your dogs, they WILL go abov and beyond! Angela made great progress in her short time with us! Sadly, Angela was an angel from the day Jim and I met her. She just wasn’t destined to stay with us forever.read more

I had a male lab with agression issues that started seemingly out of the blue. I had to have him sedated to get his vaccinations. He attacked my son,... mother, brother, and growled at anyone who approached me. I did a 2 week crate and train with Wag Ur Tail and after receiving him back could see a HUGE improvement. Oden has not attacked, or growled at anyone, and is much more calm, and laid back when people come to visit. One of Oden's biggest issues was that he did not have any socialization skills, so he was afraid, and nervous of anyone approaching him, or I. Now, people can walk up to us, and he will approach them, albeit slowly, and carefully, but he still does it. I am absolutely amazed at the transformation in Oden, and couldn't be more thankful for the professionalism, love, and patience in which Wag Ur Tail, (Mike, and T.J.) took with working with my bany Oden. He's such a pleasure to be around now, and the stress that was a constant in our life, is now a long lost memory thanks to them. I can never say thank you enough to them for helping bring out the wonderful qualities that I just knew this pup had inside him. I would absolutely recommend them to take posession of your baby for a short, or even extended time (which was difficult for me to do) because when you get them back, it will life changing!read more

TJ and Mike at Wag Ur Tail Dog Training may have saved our beautiful girl from an uncertain future. Our Daniff is very fear agressive. So much that... I am the only one to take her out in public and even I have to keep her far away from other people. TJ met us and even though Fiona freaked out, withing 15 minutes she was calm enough to actually allow him to walk her. She never trust anyone she doesn't know. Then.....like a crazy man, He wanted to take her into PetsMart. I uploaded a video if anyone wants to see the magic TJ performed. I spent a few hours there working with her. Of course she still had a few freakouts when she got supprised but she was able to clam herself down quickly. Thank you TJ and Mike. You are my heros!!!!!read more

Mike helped us with our 4 month old puppy. She and her siblings were separated from their mother and put outside into a pig pen when they were three... to four weeks old. We saved her, but she had no social or inside skills. She didn't even know how to play or what a treat was. We needed help. We found Mike and he guided us through. He taught us what to do to show her how to live inside with people through a few sessions of private lessons. Then, after 6-7 months, we gave her over to Mike for the two week board and train. For a dog that had no inside or social skills, she has become an obedient and loving dog. She is almost a year old is an amazing dog. Thank you Mike for all your assistance, we don't know what we would have done without you.read more

Our 5 yr old lab, Paisley, went and stayed with Mike for 2 weeks boarding/training while we were on vacation. We needed a boarder and decided... constructive training included was a plus for us all. Paisley is a very active girl and keeps us moving. On her return to us; she is calmer and knows multiple commands. Our walks in the neighborhood are now less stressful even if we pass a cat or another dog. This is remarkable to us as in the past, her mission was to chase every stray cat from our yard. Mike honed in on the perfect harness to use for our walks and outings from her tendency to pull with the old one. Off leash, She even remained in our yard on STAY command as deer went through our woods recently. We will continue to work with her daily. Looking forward to our follow up training session to reinforce all she has learned. Thank you Mike.read more

For starters, this post is well over due. I apologize but as we all know life gets busy. I have 15 month old German Shepherd (when I took him to... Mike he was 11 months). His name is Atticus. Atticus never gave me any problems. We trained well together, he and my fiance trained well together, as long as I was around there were no issues. The problem was that as a paramedic who works 24 hour shifts I could not be around all the time. When I was not home Atticus would make my fiance's life hell. Always barking right in her face, not necessarily aggressively but aggravating none the less. She would not get any peace when I wasn't home. I spoke with Mike about these issues and he said he could help. Atticus did the two week board training with Mike. Mike helped to polish up his obedience training and helped dramatically with his confidence and anxiety issues when I was not around. I purposely delayed writing a review (not this long) but I wanted to make sure everything would stay so to speak, not be ok for a few weeks and go back to his usual. I can not thank Mike enough for his help. The bond between my fiance and Atticus has greatly improved. They enjoy their time together now and sometimes even leave me at the house to go and do their own thing. I am confident that any training done with this program will be nothing less then top notch. Again, I apologize for the late review but thank you so much Mike for giving Atticus his confidence and keeping peace in my home.read more

We were initially drawn to Mike by his ability to “customize the course for your individual needs. Mike does not use a one-size-fits all training... protocol, like shock collars. Some trainers may rely on shock collars, but at Wag Ur Tail Dog Training, Mike employs methods and techniques that get solid results without the use of the shock collar”, which we took as positive reinforcement techniques. In our first conversation, I made it clear that our biggest concern was that our dog Baron, who we adopted 6 months earlier (2 year-old stray) had become aggressive and bitten on a few occasions. We thought the problem was counter surfing, but we weren’t sure because he was aggressive at other times with no food involved. Ex: Although he routinely roughhoused with our other, smaller dog, he turned on her and attacked her in an instance when she was barking at the front door. In our initial call I also told him he was mouthy when playing, would not come or stay and constantly jumped up on people. Mike told me it was lack of confidence and that our dog was trying to find his place in our pack. He told me he would work on that. The day before we dropped Baron off, it was clear he did not remember any of the issues I discussed with him. (I realize that now looking back) He did not even remember Baron’s name nor breed. I had written a note with all the issues I wanted Mike to work on and sent it with our dog, aggression being number 1. I’m pretty sure he didn’t read my note. After two weeks with Mike, he was definitely less mouthy. However, he still would not come or stay. It turns out, he solved our dog’s mouthy problem by putting hot sauce on his hands – not positive reinforcement. When I asked about the jumping, he said to squirt the dog with ice water. When I asked about counter surfing, he recommended putting a piece of bread on the counter soaked in hot sauce. Neither of these are positive reinforcement. When I asked about aggression, he simply said he did not see it, which I find hard to believe if my dog was living inside. This was clearly our biggest concern. The only other training advice he gave us was to use a long leash to work with “come.” Our dog did come back from his time with Mike with one difference in his personality, he constantly tried to hump our other dog. He had not done this before. Three nights after we got our dog back from Mike, he turned on us again while we were doing the dishes after dinner. He was triggered simply by my husband calling his name in a positive voice. He bit my husband and attacked our other dog. We called Mike and he offered his other trainer to come to our house, muzzle the dog and try to trigger him. We asked why he didn’t do this during the 2 weeks he had our dog. He had no answer other than offering the two free sessions. At this point it was too late, we could not have the dog in our home with 2 kids plus another 40 on the street. It’s clear to us he did very little with our dog and did not even address our main concern, aggression. We basically paid for over-priced boarding for two weeks. We asked for half of our money back and he referred to his contract saying there are no guarantees. I agree with him, but you at least have to ATTEMPT to work on the main issues, which he did not. We would NOT recommend Mike Morrison/Wag ur tailread more

We used Mike for a two-week train and board for our 1.5 year old pup Bailey. If you’re a nervous puppy mama like me and concerned about leaving... your dog for two weeks, Mike is your guy. Our dog has confidence issues and developed some bad habits when we moved to our new house that started about 6 months ago. Mike treated Bailey like his own and kept us updated on how she was doing throughout. One of the main reasons we chose him is the positive training method and it’s working! We’ve tried a few training classes over the last year and were skeptical that we would see major differences. It’s only been a few days since we got her back but we can already see major improvements and he gave us a game plan to keep improving her confidence and correcting any slips in bad behaviors on our own. She’s calmer and more confident around people, no longer barking or jumping when she greets people at our house. Mike also managed to correct her leash pulling so walks have been much more enjoyable for all of us.read more

I first would like to thank Mike personally for taking the time out to talk with me over the phone about how to work with my dog that I ended up... getting out of default and it wasn't Jaxson's fault either. He's innocent out of all the chaos he's had to endure in these past few months. When I called Mike I was a total wreck because I have never had to worried about a big dog, since my little Pomeranian was just enough for my hubby and I. Anyway, Mike talked with me over the phone arrived a few days later and everything from here on is hx. He automatically identified the type of dog I had which was an Australian Cattle mix which requires a lot of energy that I didn't have but was willing to work with. I first purchased a few sessions and I have to admit that I immediately saw improvements but as my lessons were coming to an end, Jaxson broke through the invisible fence and I was thinking about putting him down. I then decided to go the extra mile and let Mike board and train him and I believe that this was the best decision that I could have ever made. When Mike arrived to get him I was more nervous than Mike because Jaxson's behavior is unpredictable; however, before I knew it he lured my baby in the back of his truck with a few hot dogs and then Mike picked him up and placed him in the crate. I was amazed and this spoke volumes to me about his level of training. Anyone can see that Mike genuinely loves dogs and unlike others he is not afraid to handle what people call “aggressive breeds” either. I personally call him the dog whisper! In the two weeks and me getting him back from training I see a big difference with his behavior and he no longer jumps all over me and will follow my command to stop. Some of his other behaviors will get better as long as I keep following through with the the lessons as given. Jaxson's confidence has improved and he much calmer. I must say that Mike does take the time to get to your dog and works with them through whatever issues they may have. He was so impress with Jaxson that he admitted that he was going to miss him, and it's obvious that Jaxson became attached to Mike too because I could see it when they were playing my front yard. Sorry Mike can't give you my buddy even though he's a piece of work when he wants to be. LOL! I plan to continue to use Mike as my go to person and allow him to watch Jaxson when going on vacations or travels.read more

We didn't want a dog who'd had his spirit broken or personality completely changed. Our dog went out to Mike with an understanding of what we wanted him to do, but came back listening more reliably and with better manners. Smart dogs will test, and with three little kids at home some bad habits were learned, this training was a good reminder and something we just couldn't pull off on our own. It's only been a few days but we have enjoyed showing off our better behaved buddy.read more

Mike took our out of control 9-month-old chocolate lab and turned him into a well-behaved, polite member of our household! I was at my wits' end with... CJ. Best investment ever! He can walk appropriately on a leash now with Mike's recommended harness. He can stay in one place for a few minutes at a time. (Still working on that!) He's exhibiting so much self-control regarding chewing, trash, rough play with with his shih tzu brother. Overall, he's exactly what we wanted: a happy, energetic, well-behaved fur kid. I only wish we'd have met Mike 3-4 months sooner. Oh, one last thing. Mike's been great with after care. He left us with advice, tools, and encouragement. He's also contacted us several times to check in on CJ. Considering an investment in your dog? Call Mike.read more

Mike is such a fantastic person and dog trainer, with a wealth of knowledge. Im so glad he uses positive reinforcements instead of shock collars. My... family hated walking our hyper Goldendoodle because he would go crazy whenever he saw another dog or when we had guest visit he jumped all over them. Mike really worked with him and showed us how to keep him focused during walks and he is listening on command. Honestly, I wanted to give up on our dog because he was so unruly and wouldn't listen. Mike has helped to change all of that! He's encouraging, motivating, and so helpful. We also love to support our Military Vets! Thanks again!!read more

Lola just returned home and we are enjoying the reunion. Jerry took her out for a walk and she walked alongside him, no pulling or lunging at other... dogs. Didn't see people walking, so will anticipate she will behave as nicely as today. Very Pleased with the training and the information Mike gave us. From the correct collar and leash, to proper giving of treats when she behaves as instructed. Will keep updating as she progresses. Would recommend without reservation Mike's training. Mike is awesome! After an hour session, my unruly 8mo puppy was much calmer and stopped chewing things he wasn't supposed to. Mike gave me plenty of... ideas and tips as well as things to work on between sessions. He tailored training specific behaviors which worked well for us. He is also available to answer questions and offer direction. We are happy 🖒read more

It was so helpful working with Mike for help with our Sasha. She progressed rapidly and very well with his assistance. All of his suggestions and directions helped to change our dogs guardedness and shyness and House, leash training very nicely and pretty rapidly. She is so much more fun when we can now do things confidently with her. Mike was patient , kind and very professional. It was a very positive experience for our pet as well as us. Thank you again Mike. I will keep you in mind when friends ask about Sasha’s good behaviors. I wouldn’t hesitate to make a referral.

Our Happy Clients

“Mike has helped me not to be anxious and how to take control of my puppy. He answers emails right away and never tires of my questions . . . In the two lessons we have had so far, my puppy can go up and down stairs, comes when called (still a work in progress), will walk right with me off his leash, and stays when we are outside.”

“Mike and his family were great to work with, he was very responsive with every question I had while my dog was at the two week training course. They did a fantastic job with Steven (my dog) and I now know that he understands what I am saying to him since he is doing all of it (sit, place, off, along with a few others). The main thing I asked Mike to help Steven with was to please leave my cats alone. He was constantly chasing them around the house. Now they are not only able to be in the same room together but can actually be by each other. Mike was great and I would happily use his services again, if I was to get another dog.”

“Mike did such an amazing job with Dixie. She was a wild little beagle and now with the help of Mike she is a well mannered member of our family. Choosing Mike was a great investment! I would happily use his services again, if I was to get another dog.”
